The launch monitor is the brain of a home simulator. Choose one by asking the right questions, not by reading spec sheets. Where will it sit: behind you, beside the ball, or overhead? Will you use it indoors, outdoors, or both? And does it work with the software you want? Is there a subscription? Check the current terms on the maker's site. And who in the house will use it, right handed, left handed, or both? If you're unsure, start in the entry tier. If you're building a room, pick your software first, then the monitor. And budget for the extras. See you on the tee, working golfers.

Ask these five questions first

  1. Where will it sit? Some units sit behind the golfer, some beside the ball, and some mount overhead. That affects how much room you need (see our space guide).
  2. Indoor, outdoor or both? If you want to take it to the range, a portable unit makes sense. Check the maker's notes on indoor setup for each model.
  3. What software do you want? Practice apps, course play and game modes vary by brand. Confirm the software you want works with the launch monitor you pick.
  4. Is there a subscription? Many monitors unlock features through memberships. Check the current terms on the maker's site, because they change.
  5. Who in the house will use it? Left-handed and right-handed golfers in one family should check how each unit handles both.
We haven't run our own side-by-side testing of these units, so you won't find made-up accuracy scores here. Use the questions above, then read the maker's official specifications for the model you're considering.

Bundle or buy separately?

Retailers often bundle a launch monitor with a net, mat or full studio package. Bundles save time. Buying separately lets you choose each piece and upgrade one part later. Compare a bundle against the same parts bought individually:

Our honest advice

  • If you're unsure you'll use it, start in the entry tier. These units also work outdoors at a range.
  • If you're building a room, choose the software you want first, then pick a launch monitor that supports it.
  • Budget for the extras: software, a mat and somewhere to hit into.
