How to Choose a Golf Hitting Mat

The mat is the part of a home setup that you touch on every single swing. It's worth thinking about.

Why the mat matters

Hard mats can be rough on wrists and elbows, and they may hide fat shots that real turf would punish. Better mats are built to feel more like turf. Read each maker's description of how its mat behaves when you hit behind the ball.

What to compare

  • Size: do you want a hitting strip or a mat big enough to stand on?
  • Both hands: some mats are made for right- and left-handed golfers to share.
  • Tee options: check whether you can tee up a driver.
  • Replacement parts: on some mats, the hitting strip can be replaced on its own.
  • Launch monitor fit: make sure the mat leaves room for your monitor's placement.
