A home golf simulator isn't one product. It's a stack of parts: something to hit into, something to hit off, a launch monitor, a display, and software. Tier one is just swing. A net and a basic mat. No ball data, but real reps whenever your schedule allows. Tier two adds numbers. A portable launch monitor sends your shot data to an app, and bundles package the net, mat, and monitor together. Tier three swaps the net for an impact screen and projector, so you can see the course. Tier four is the dedicated golf room, often with professional design help. The working golfer rule: buy what gets you swinging this month, and upgrade one piece at a time. Dated prices are in the full guide.
The five parts of every setup
Whatever you spend, a home setup comes down to the same pieces. Knowing them makes it easier to see where your money is going:
- Something to hit into: a net, an impact screen or a full enclosure.
- Something to hit off: a hitting mat. This matters more for your joints than most people expect.
- Something to measure the shot: a launch monitor.
- Something to show the shot: a phone, tablet, TV or projector.
- Software: some launch monitors come with an app. Course-play software is often a separate purchase or subscription.
Tier 1: "Just let me swing" (under about $300)
A net and a basic mat. You won't get ball data, but you'll get reps, and on a busy week reps are what keep a swing from going stale. Pair it with your phone's camera to check your positions.

Tier 2: Net plus launch monitor (about $500 to $1,600)
This is where most people start getting numbers. A portable launch monitor sits behind or beside the ball and sends data to an app. Packages bundle the net, mat and monitor together, which saves you from piecing it all together yourself.

How to choose your tier
- Measure the room before anything else.
- Decide whether you want numbers (a launch monitor) or just reps (a net and mat).
- Check what software works with the launch monitor you like, and whether it needs a subscription.
- Leave room in the budget for the mat. Hitting off a hard surface is no fun.
- Compare bundles against buying the parts separately at two retailers.
